Mobility Scooters

If you are enquiring about scooters it means that you are probably finding it difficult to get around.

One of the most frustrating things as we get older, or as our health deteriorates leading to a restriction of movement, is the lack of mobility and freedom to travel about as easily as we did as a younger person.

Fortunately we live in a world where there is a wide range of electric scooters that make it easier to get out and enjoy your freedom regardless of health issues. With a scooter you can enjoy all the things you used to do before it became difficult to get around. Like; a quick journey to the shops to get a loaf of bread, having a day out at the bingo hall or visiting a friend.

Getting out and about is important to your well being; Fresh air, meeting people, socialising and being independent-all affect your state of mind and ultimately your health.

You can take a leisurely ride up the sea front or to the park, go to the coffee shop with your friends, watch or play bowls, nip to the fish and chip shop for your dinner, get to a doctor’s appointment on your own and then go and get the prescription, everything can be almost as it used to be, with a modern mobility scooter.

Giving you your independence and freedom again to come and go as you please, you don’t have to rely on relatives or neighbour’s to do things for you. You’re no longer stuck indoors or have to pay for bus or taxi fares. Other people on scooters talk to you, it’s just like being in a club.

Having a scooter opens up your world again.

Here are 7 important questions you must ask to narrow down the type of scooter that will benefit you best;-

1. What would you like a scooter to do for you? Would you like to put the scooter in your car boot and use it when you reach your destination, or ride from your home to the various places you need to go? This will determine the type of scooter.

2. How far do you want or need to travel on your scooter each day or week?

3. How fast do you want to cover that distance? Do you want 4, 6 or 8mph? Which would be more useful for you?

4. Are there any comfort issues you will need to address, i.e. leg room, single handed operation?

5. Where will you store the scooter? For example, do you have a garage or shed, or do you have room indoors, perhaps in the hallway.
If you don’t have any of these and the scooter will need to be kept outside, a suitable waterproof cover will be required.

6. Is the storage area accessible easily? Will you need ramps to get over a door step or an electric garage door if it’s too heavy to manage? Perhaps the gate may need to be made wider to make it easy to turn into. You must make it easy to get the scooter in and out, or you won’t use it.

7. Will you need to sort out a power point for charging? If the scooter is to be kept outside, then a proper, safe, external electric socket will need to be fitted. An extension lead hanging out of the window may not be safe if it rains, or could be an attractive way for a burglar to get in. We can advise on a vetted reliable and qualified tradesman to fit an outside socket.

Here are the facts about these modern more advanced scooters and the various aspects of the different types that you should know about, before you make a buying decision.

A quick look at the 3 different types of scooter.

1. “Folding” Car Boot style scooters

These are all small in size, and dismantle quickly into manageable parts.

They are designed to fit into most car boots, and because of their size, have limited comfort and range, realistically 8 miles. They can only be ridden on the path and to cross the road. Because they are quite small, it is possible to ride them into some shops. The maximum speed is 4 mph, some do slightly less than this depending on the size. (Walking pace is 2.2 mph)
Most of these will take a rider up to 18 stone.

2. Mid Size pavement scooter

These scooters have a longer range, typically 20 miles, (compared with 8 miles on a car boot scooter) comfortable seating and more leg room. Some even have lights, and have a top speed of 4 mph. This is faster than walking pace, and you will overtake every body who is walking if you set the speed to full.
These scooters can only be ridden on the pavement and to cross the road.
Most will take between 18 and 23 stones

3. 8 MPH Scooters

Rather than class these as a size, I have classed as speed capability. This is because 8 mph scooters come in the compact mid -size or the larger scooters that will travel further and have more comfort.
It is possible to have a scooter that will give 25 to 35 miles range, depending on battery size, with a super comfortable seat and suspension.

There is a switch on or near the dashboard to adjust the speed between 4 and 8 mph, (or High or Low) so they can be ridden on the path or road.

These all have to have by law, front and rear lights, indicators, and a rear view mirror because of their road worthiness. This size scooter also has to display a road tax disc which is classed disabled /exempt and there is no charge for this.
Weight limits can be up to 35 stone

A Mobility Scooter Supplier you can trust

Here are 7 reasons to choose Beactive Mobility, to provide your scooter and customer care.
We can help you choose the right scooter for your particular needs then provide full service and support.

1. Get Professional advice- its important

It is critical you receive professional advice about which scooter is suitable and most beneficial for your particular needs.
The staff at Beactive Mobility are knowledgeable and fully trained on all aspects regarding your scooter and will assess your needs to ensure you get the correct model you require.

For instance Jan, my wife, is an ex-staff nurse. She has a quite awesome knowledge on back care and pressure management.

I have attended five courses with occupational therapists on specialist seating solutions, leg positioning and electric and manual wheelchair assessments.

I am a Motability Accredited Advisor, (one of only 32 in the whole of the U.K), and all staff are trained to advise on correct mobility insurance.

We will advise on all aspects of storage or access problems, whether you’ve got a garage with no electric socket or just a paved area by the house, we can find solutions for you and a test drive of a scooter and we will point out safety issues to enable you to ride your scooter with confidence.

2. Get complete peace of mind from the Beactive staff and service.

In order to provide you and all our customers with the utmost service and advice, we became Financial Services Authority (FSA) approved. You should know that any company that wants to provide insurance advice now has to by law, be FSA approved.

What this means is that correct insurance, not over insured or under insured is provided for you.
(Non approved companies can only hand out leaflets, they cannot help fill in forms or advise on insurance)

Jan and I, and our staff will advise which insurance is best for you; it covers theft, any driver, storm, flood and fire and accidental damage, and personal effects that are damaged in the event of an accident and two million pounds of public liability.

You can also ask our professionals about an extended warranty which is also available, which would pay all costs for parts and labour after the manufacturer’s first year warranty has expired. Excludes wear and tear).
For instance this is similar to an extended warranty you can buy for a washing machine or TV. which pays all costs if an item breaks down.

The batteries that come with the scooter are guaranteed by us (Beactive Mobility Ltd) for one year against manufacturing faults, (not neglect), most companies only warranty batteries for 6 months, but we think it fair to give you peace of mind for a whole year.

3. Do you want new or re-conditioned?

Many people prefer a new scooter, but the best companies provide a range of re-conditioned scooters which are a realistic choice if you are working to a tighter budget.

Our pre-loved scooters are fully serviced and valeted by our factory trained engineers, and come with new or nearly new excellent tested batteries, and are guaranteed from 3 months to one year depending on the age of the scooter. (batteries are guaranteed for one year).
Our Engineers are so proficient at refurbishment that sometimes the pre-owned scooters are mistaken for brand new!

4. We care about you

What has shocked me, even in the mobility world, is that the term that is bandied about, “customer care” often isn’t that caring at all.
We take a different attitude. Why? Because you are a person. If I was buying I would want the very best advice, the very best service and support, and I see nothing different between me buying a scooter or you wanting one.
So when we say we give a high level of customer care we mean it. Try us and see.

To ensure you of the best possible service, we are BHTA registered (British Healthcare Trades Association), which means we work to a code of practise laid down by the association for customer care, which we sign and agree to adhere to.
We receive training to ensure we can provide you with a correct assessment and deliver a service level you expect and deserve to receive.

5. What about back –up service?

Remember the back up service you will require is very important, for example: - if you get a puncture or a fault develops with the scooter, or perhaps you need more training or some advice to put your mind at rest, help is at hand.

Nobody should sell a scooter without providing you with extensive back-up service.

This often happens when buying from the internet. The horror stories we have heard;- The scooter had turned up in a box and had to be assembled (how we receive them,) when it went wrong it had to be sent back at the buyers cost in the original box and was away for three weeks.

Other stories are after reporting a fault, the company did go to the customers home on this occasion, but they couldn’t find anything wrong, so they charged the customer a call out of £150! Sure the scooter was cheaper to start with, but that’s the reason why, companies simply cannot supply the back up customers need if they are discounted that much. The sums just do not add up. It’s a sell and forget it scenario.

Our service department has factory trained engineers and we normally respond to any emergency problem you experience within thirty-five minutes during shop hours to keep you mobile. We will virtually drop everything to get out to you within a 20 mile radius. That’s the degree to which we will look after you.

In-fact here just two recent comments from satisfied customers;-

"Thank you for your very prompt attendance and the professional way you completed the job,-in the nick of time by the sounds of it! "Mr Gesen. Norwich

"Many thanks for doing a good job on my buggy last Saturday in Marks & Spencer, and at a reasonable price. I will certainly get my next one from you." S. Wright Lowestoft
