STAIRLIFT BUYWISE GUIDE
KEY QUESTIONS YOU MUST ASK TO AVOID AN EXPENSIVE MISTAKE WHEN BUYING A
STAIRLIFT
- IS THE SURVEY FREE?
Most reputable companies do not charge for a survey and quotation
- WILL THE SURVEYOR TRY TO PRESSURE ME INTO AN IMMEDIATE SALE?
Some National companies do have high pressure
sales tactics and will try their hardest to get you to sign up on the day,
sometimes staying for hours until you sign. This is because they are on
commission. Our surveyor will ask if you would like to go ahead, but there will
be no pressure to sign on the day
- OPEN TRACK OR CLOSED TRACK?
The style of track is down to how aesthetically pleasing you would like it to
be. Some have a track with “teeth” exposed which can be greasy if touched,
others are enclosed in a tube which is either white or beige coloured.
- SLIM LINE SEAT OR STANDARD?
This is down to the room you may have at the top or bottom of your stairway. If
access is difficult there are slim line versions from one or two manufacturers.
- ARE THERE CHEAPER OPTIONS?
If you have a landing and then more
treads;-instead of having a curved one piece stair lift it could be cheaper to
have another mini track and seat, or a drop down hinged platform which means you
should only require one cheaper straight stairlift, but you would still have the
cost of the platform and fitting to add on.
Other facts about stair lifts
- Fitting time is normally 7 to 10 days. In an emergency, sometimes
it can be fitted quicker
- Weight capacity is 18 to 21 stones
- Can the person who will be using the lift, lift their feet onto
the footplate and actually get onto a seat?
- Does the manufacturer offer an extended warranty scheme
Second hand stairlifts
- How old is the second hand stairlift that’s being offered? Are spare parts still
available and is the manufacturer still in business?
Price
- Every home is different so it is very difficult to
give an accurate price without a survey. Companies that state a price in their
advertising(usually a low price) are using this as a lead generator and you can
bet the price you will be quoted, will not be the price advertised. There are
too many variables to say the stair lift will cost x-pounds when a survey has
not taken place to take into account headroom, power supply, weight rating, seat
type, remote options, how many treads, additional work such as banister removal,
manual or power hinge if required etc.
Benefits for you
- You gain access to your whole home again, your own bedroom and bathroom etc.
- You do not have to exert any energy or go through any pain to get upstairs
- You do not have to move to a bungalow or special accommodation, with all the
expense and upheaval of a move.
